Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything—all she had to live on.”
Giving - if you are anything like me you probably have cold callers from a hundred different charities in a hundred different call centres calling you at home, right at dinner time almost every night of the week. I'm sure there are some legit calls in amongst all the scammers and con artists that also use a similar approach to try and separate people from their cash. It is a difficult subject to talk about because for many people it is one of the biggest idol left in their lives. Martin Luther described a 'god' or idol as that thing in which we find refuge in all our need. So many of our common daily problems are solved with money; it's no surprise that many of us will first turn to our wallets to meet our needs before we turn to God. The key is to have an attitude like this widow. To know that even if we have to declare bankruptcy, God will supply our needs - that is some next level faith. When our hearts yearn for more money before they yearn for more God, then our heart's priorities need readjusting. Have you given it all to Jesus? If not, what are you holding back?
Lord Jesus, you are the answer to all my needs and questions, yet I so often try to control things about my life that are better left in your hands. Help me to live each day with a growing trust that whatever circumstances the day brings, you will provide all my needs. Amen
