JOHN 3:8

The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.

TO PONDER

Most of us across Sydney, Newcastle and the Hunter Valley have experienced what strong winds and rain can do during our recent Summer storms. We have seen trees come down across roads and powerlines, leaving traffic backed up for miles and numerous homes and businesses without electricity. There is no denying that the wind can be powerful. It can be destructive at times when it comes in gales, cyclones and tornados, yet it can be cooling and refreshing when it comes as a gentle summer breeze. There are times when as Christians, God empowers us with his Spirit to confront injustice and to do so with power and conviction. While these kinds of events do happen and they can be big and draw a lot of attention, just like a hurricane, we don't experience them nearly as often as the regular weather patterns of an average strength wind or gentle breeze. Sometimes we can forget that the wind is still blowing even when things are calm and gentle. The Spirit of God is always at work through the Word. He is always at work in his people, even when the work is slow and gentle and hard to notice. We may not always see where it comes from or know where it is blowing but when we live our lives grounded in God's Word and in tune with the Spirit, we will be led where God intends and we will be exactly what is needed in whatever location and situation he places us.

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of the Holy Spirit which you offer in baptism. Help me to be aware of the promptings and leading of the Spirit, so that I might bring your Word effectively into the places you lead me. Amen
